The day after the deadly rampage at a California high school ended with the gunman killed and his victims wounded, some students at a nearby public high school were still being asked to wear bulletproof vests.
But with the school year just beginning, they’re now being asked about what happens when a student is found with a weapon.
In the wake of the massacre, parents and educators have begun to raise concerns about how to prevent mass shootings at school, and what they’re doing about them.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Associated Press looked at how schools are responding to the issue and what it means for the country.
Here are some of the questions being raised:What happens when an active shooter kills a student?
There have been more than 200 school shootings in the United States this year, according to the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, or NCTRTC.
At least five have occurred in the past two months, and at least 16 more are under investigation.
In addition to the high-profile school shootings, there are now more mass shootings than there were during the previous 20 years.
In 2016, there were 1,834 school shootings.
In 2015, there had been 636.
So far this year there have been 3,819 school shootings — an increase of more than 50 percent.
How do schools respond to a school shooting?
The answer is that schools are using a mix of school security measures, community outreach and social media to help their students cope.
A school can’t just shut down for a few hours and leave its students alone.
In the case of the California high-school shooting, officials said there were some students who were able to leave their school but had to stay inside, and a police officer who responded to the scene had to use a baton on at least one student to stop him from running.
There is no clear way to determine if a student’s weapon was a real firearm, or a fake one.
A gun that is not a real gun may have been a toy.
There are a lot of people out there who want to buy guns, but we don’t know who they are.
So there’s a lot more scrutiny, and more work on that.
What do we do when someone gets shot at school?
There is not an easy answer, but many schools have put a gun-toting security guard at every entrance to prevent an active shooting.
In California, a gun can be found inside a car parked in front of the school, so it’s not a great place to be if you’re a student.
So schools are putting a gun carrier at every doorway.
In Colorado, schools put a security guard in the front office, and in California, they put a guard at each of the entrances to each school, including one at a high school.
The school has a gun safe, which is an extra layer of security, said Eric Kandel, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, who was in attendance at the California High School shooting.
The AP/Yahoo News School Safety Summit, held in Colorado in February, was also focused on gun safety.
But while that was a major focus, there was no effort to limit the use of guns in the school.
Kandel said he was concerned about some of those concerns, but that it’s important to have schools and teachers talk about these issues.
In Florida, a student was taken into custody for carrying a gun on campus in the wake the shooting.
He was charged with assault, a felony.
In Tennessee, schools were told to put armed guards in each classroom.
In Arizona, schools are now asking students to wear body armor and bulletproof vest.
The U.S. Department of Education has asked schools to review their policies on how to deal with a student carrying a firearm at school.
