High school football player charged in fatal crash in Lakewood

Police say a high school football team member was charged with murder in connection with the fatal crash of a car last week in Lakewulf County.

Lakewood police said on Tuesday the 21-year-old student was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide in connection to the June 27 crash.

Lakewulf police Lt.

Greg Meehan said the driver, 20-year old Marcus Brown, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Lakeyhigh senior Chris Kelleher was among the players injured when the SUV he was in crossed the center line on a road in Lakeview, a suburb of Lakewood.

Kelleher said Brown was speeding when he struck the car and a friend was hit by a tree and pinned underneath.

Brown was taken into custody and taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Lakewullow police Lt Greg Meesh.

Police have not released Brown’s name.

Brown’s uncle, John Kelleh, said in a statement that he and Brown have been friends since the age of 7.

He said his nephew was “very passionate” and loved football.

He added that Brown’s mother is also a teacher and they were friends since he was a young child.

Brown attended the Lakewood High School.
